Role of the eveningers
This dialogue was the first ever programme organised by Journalists Resource Centre to assess the role, contribution, scope and functioning of evening newspapers. Where some of the participants ascribed a positive role to the eveningers, others strongly condemned them for promoting wrong values. The dialogue maintained that the role of eveningers came into limelight as the state-owned TV news remained ineffective to deliver. But with the falling standard of journalism among eveningers due to the policies of the owners, they ver soon lost their credibility. After the end of martial law regime many newspapers promoted sensationalism in the name of freedom of press. Though, this sensationalism was promoted as a requirement to capture the market but then it was carried a bit too far, which eventually created a negative image of theirs in the society. The success enjoyed by the eveningers was restricted only to Karachi, and that, by no means ensured their success in unless a similar industrial culture is developed in the city.

Though journalism was considered more of a service-oriented business rather than a holy mission, the ethics involved in the practice of journalism was stressed upon. The policy line followed by most of the eveningers has been about selling more, rather than setting precedents of ethical journalism.

This sensationalism further enhanced mis-reporting and profit earning became the sole objective of an eveninger. The institutionalisation of corruption was the biggest accusation that eveningers had to face. It was suggested that an effective accountability mechanism should be developed from within the journalists for media watch.
