| Technology & development in the new millennium |
Based
in United Kingdom, Third World Science Technology & Development (STD)
Forum was set up in 1982 to promote the use of science and technology for
poverty alleviation and development.
The forum has decided to hold its fifth annual conference in collaboration with the University of Karachi at the university premises in Karachi. The four day (24 27 April 2000) conference will dedicate its proceedings to the theme of Technology & Development in the new Millennium. Annual conferences of the STD Forum were previously organised in the UK, Tunisia, and South Africa. Participants from academia, industry, policy makers, NGOs, and international organisations will attend and present papers at the conference. The conference aims to address issues that will be central to development planning and policy, the challenges they pose for developing countries, and the global framework for dealing with the issues. It also covers crucial issues such as the women's role in technology and development, intermediate technologies and community development, technology policy, technology and environmental issues, and the role of new technologies in development. These topics take on an ever more important role in the new millennium as the new technological revolution especially in communication and biotechnology fields is accelerating at a high speed and the gap between the haves and have-nots in technology is increasing at an alarming rate. This conference will thus look at the issues of policy requirements, and, North-South and South-South cooperation to accelerate the development process in the developing countries of the South and to ensure the benefits to the general population. Conference papers and submission deadline: The deadline for submission of full papers is 14 January 2000. All papers should be submitted (preferably in electronic format Microsoft Word) at the following address: Dr. I. A. Shibli, 2 Warwick Gardens, Ashtead, Surrey, KT21 2HR, UK.
