| Un Political Cartoon Awards |
The UN Correspondents Association
has instituted the Ranan Lurie political cartoon
awards "for the best political cartoons reflecting the spirit and the principles
of the United Nations." There will be 13 awards, the first of which will
be announced October 2000. The prizes range from worth $10,000, $ 5,000,
$ 3,000, and ten (10) honourable mentions, in the form of plaques. Political
cartoonists from across the world are invited to enter. The entries must
have been printed in any publication published anywhere, in any language,
with name of publication and date included, accompanied by a newspaper
reprint, and translated into English. Exhibits are limited to two cartoons
per individual. Reproductions must be presented measuring no larger than
9 x inches.
The award is named after
the leading political cartoonist and the chair for the judging panel is
Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel. Among the 27-person panel of judges will be
the Algerian, Nigerian, Canadian, Hungarian, Indian, South Korean and Spanish
ambassadors to the UN. Secretary general of the UN Correspondents Association
Azim M. Mian, correspondent of Pakistani daily The News, is also on the
panel.
