International Seminars
Established in 1962, The Thomson Foundation (TF), based in Cardiff (UK)provides practical, intensive training both in the UK and abroad, along with a wide range of consultancies, to journalists, managers, technicians and production staff in television, radio and the press.

TF has announced to conduct two international training seminars on Managing Newspapers in the 21st Century, and Broadcast Journalism: News and Current Affairs - Credibility World-wide on behalf of the British Council to be held on 
30 January to 5 February 2000.

Managing Newspapers in the 21st Century

The seminar is intended for the owners of newspapers, and for those whose job it is to manage them, and will look at the challenge of running a profitable and successful business in an increasingly difficult environment. Within the global communications village, many of the problems are shared ones - this seminar will examine some common themes and seek common solutions.

The main topics will include: (i) Managing change: as it affects people, technology, and competition; (ii) Managing revenue: the quest for a rising income in a sometimes-shrinking market; (iii) Managing content: the right editorial prescription, and packaging it to attract; (iv) Managing freedom: balancing public good with the rights of the person 

The programme will be of particular interest to management decision-makers from all sectors of the newspaper - financial, commercial, and editorial.

Broadcast Journalism 

The aim of this seminar is to encourage development in News and Current Affairs output. The event will seek to improve the product throughout the developing world by grasping the problems now and agreeing the solutions.
The main topics will include: 

(i) Why standards matter; 
(ii) How training will improve standards; 
(iii) Technology and editorial practices - marching in step; 
(iv) Steering editorial control into the right hands; 
(v) Tailoring techniques to cultural context; 
(vii) Legislation, regulation, ownership and ethics; (viii) 

Management of news and current affairs programmes 

The programme will be of particular interest to senior editors from both radio and television that are striving for fairer coverage and wider public service.
