Trial or Punishment?
JRC's mandate places freedom of expression as its essential component. During the year, it took up case of Zafaryab Ahmed, an eminent journalism and human rights activist from .

He was charged with treason by the Federal Investigation Agency. No allegations were substantiated against him since 1995 when he was first arrested in 1995. But his name was kept on Exit Control List (ECL) for about three years, and he was denied to join Colby College, Portland Maine, USA where became first recipient of OAK Foundation Fellowship to teach and do research on International Human Rights. Amnesty International has declared Zafaryab Ahmed one of the Defenders of Universal Declaration Human Rights. He is also one of the contributors of Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs' book entitled "Peace Message" that has carried messages from world celebrities, five of them being Nobel Laureates.

The current suspension of his right to movement has already cost his participation to occasions of international prestige, as a speaker i.e. Amnesty's London Jamboree, London School of Economics (LSE) and UDHR Conference to commemorate its 50th anniversary held in Paris. About 69 websites to show solidarity with Zafaryab Ahmed and issues of child labour and human rights. As in the words of Colby College's letter, he is an hour 'honour' to our country, worth recognised rather than the punishment he was extended for human rights issues the sanity demands.

JRC is proud that its national and international campaign for Zafaryab Ahmed did work. He has already joined Colby College this December.
