Activity round-up: May 13, 1999
Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Punjab Union of Journalists (PUJ) Journalists Resource Centre and the Press Club (LPC) arranged a conference to commemorate the Press Freedom Day on the 13th of May at the Nisar Osmani Hall, LPC. The speakers held that the journalist community in Pakistan is well aware of its duties and professional ethics. It will continue its struggle for the noble movement of pen like it did during the Zia regime, they added.

The conference participants also took exception to the arrest of Najam Sethi, Rehamt Shah Afridi and Sajid Iqbal, a Sargodha-based pressman who was thrashed by the son of local MNA for not yielding to his will.

With a vow to hold up the torch of press freedom and counter all the anti-press moves in a befitting manner, the journalists passed various resolutions and, later, staged a rally from the Press Club to the Assembly Hall. Pertinent to mention here is that the rally was also attended by a number of political and social activists who announced to stand by all the press endeavours for the sake of its perennial liberation. Prominent among the conference speakers were PFUJ President I.H.Rashid, PUJ General Secreatry Tasawwar Raza, Mustafa Khar, Sardar Asif Ahmed Ali and Asma Jehangir.
