Seminar on contents of Nikahnama
The government should revise the contents of Nikahnama and should also properly train the Nikah registrars to end discrimination against women in family matters.
This was recommended in a seminar on Muslim Family Laws: Contents of Nikahnama and implications, arranged by JRC on December 7, 1999, in collaboration with Legal Awareness Watch (LAW) at Nisar Osmani Auditorium of Press Club.

The participants of the seminar recommended that non-registered marriages should be registered within a stipulated time. They lamented that a serious, sacred and sensitive social contract was being dealt with carelessness, insensitivity and irresponsibility. They proposed to cancel the license of those Nikah registrars found involved in producing forged or inappropriate Nikahnamas.

The discussion of the seminar also revolved around the offensive language used in Nikahnama against women, which needed to be expunged or altered. The participants pointed out lack of information about the bridegroom and ambiguity arising out of the contents of the various articles of the Nikahnama. They maintained that by including the missing information and removing ambiguity, a lot of post-marriage litigation could be avoided.

Former vice president high court bar association (LHCA), Ghazala Khan's paper was read out in her absence. She pointed out various lacunas present in the contents of Nikahnama, which could be exploited by any of the parties towards their benefit. In the absence of the registration of Nikah, if husband or wife dies, the heirs might be deprived of their due rights, she added. She demanded that women should also be appointed as Nikah registrars and they should be trained to keep records.
Social activist from Shirkat Gah, Suhail Warraich informed the participants that a committee headed by Justice Zahid Aslam recommended reforming of the family laws but they had not been made part of the legislation still far. He said that Bangladesh inherited the same laws but they amended them elaborately in 1974, contrary to He, however, conceded that judiciary in Pakistan has been favourable to women in family disputes but proper legislation has not been done to check injustice against women.

Earlier, Secretary of LAW, Laiqat Ali advocate also presented his paper, and moderated the event. A video film on the theme produced by Pakistan Women Lawyers Association (PWLA) was exhibited at the conclusion of this meeting.
A large number of journalists, legal experts, Nikah registrars and social activists of the city attended the seminar.
