SAARC: The people's participation
A documentary film on  the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), 'Cradled in a civilization, bonded by history', was televised in Press Club before an audience of journalists and private documentary filmmakers. The film was produced by renowned indian media man, Javed Naqvi, who had come to cover Indian Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visit to  

The film included interviews of the SAARC heads of states and other distinguished people of the region who expressed their views on the SAARC initiative. Prominent among the interviewed were Atal Bihari Vajpayee , Indian Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, Special Envoy to Indian Prime Minister Khushwant Singh, Prime Minister of Bengladesh Haseena Wajid, Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, former Chief of the Pakistan Army Staff Gen. Retd. Mirza Aslam Beg, Pakistan's art performer Sheema Kirmani, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Hossein Mohammad Irshad and Prime Minister Nepal Girja Prasad Koirala.

The film focussed on cultural legacies that the South Asian region shares in common. It established that despite the existence of a cold war between India and Pakistan, the cultural ambassadors continued to exchange the message of peace. The Indian Prime Minister Mr Vajpayee in his interview said that SAARC should not be confined to the governmental level only, rather people's involvement in it should be ensured. Artistes nd cultural figures however stressed on the need for cultural exchange among the SAARC countries. While discussing the commonalties of the South Asian region the agrarian base of economy was also pointed out.
The film was earlier shown in the Karachi Press Club two days ago.
