India, Karnataka:
Government ignoring fluorosis threat
Hydrologeologists say the Karnataka State Government is not taking the threat of fluorosis in rural areas seriously. The Mines and Geology Department has found excess levels of fluoride in -13 districts. In Ramanagaram, Bangalore rural district, where fluoride levels are four times higher than the permissible level of 1.5 mg/l, children are already suffering from teeth fluorosis. The introduction of Nalgonda defluoridation kits, as attempted by the Danish International Development Agency (Danida), has proven unsuccessful, as villagers find the treatment method too cumbersome. With a lack of government guidelines and experts to tackle the problem, there is a fear the number and seriousness (bone deformities) of fluorosis will rise.
