is sitting in session to close the decade, evaluating stories of success and failures over the past ten years and setting new targets for disaster prevention for the next millenium. impact of natural hazards on vulnerable communities, the United Nations
General Assembly proclaimed, in 1989, the International Decade for Natural
Disaster Reduction (IDNDR 1990-2000). Its objective is
to reduce through concerted international action and appropriate
use of
By the year 2000, to assess the achievements of the Decade all countries should have in place: (a) comprehensive
national assessments of risks from natural hazards integrated into development
plans,
This year, the international community will evaluate 10 years of achievements in disaster reduction and more importantly, map a comprehensive disaster reduction strategy for the 21st century. The 1998-1999 IDNDR Action
Plan (in line with Yokohama Strategy) is composed of thematic events
and regional meetings leading to the Final Event of the Decade, which
includes the International Programme Forum, to take place in Geneva, in
July.
