Recent Cyclone that occurred in May 1999, effected both Indian and Pakistani sides. An initial information sheet prepared by Disaster Mitigation Institute, Ahmadabad, India, is presented here;

May 1999 Cyclone In Gujarat

Wind Velocity :

  •  Kutch Region : 150 to 200 Kmph.
  •  Saurastra Region : 0 Kmph.
Affected Districts :
 Kutch, Jamanagar, Amreli, Porbandar, 
 Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Surat, Valsad,
 Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Bharuch.

Severely Affected Pockets :

  •  Abdasa, Lakhpat, Mandvi, and  Jakhau of Kutch distirict.
  •  Dwarka and Okha of Jamnagar district.
Approximately affected Population in state : More than 50.000.

Human Loss : 538 fishermen are missing from Saurastra region. 2000 fishermen are missing in the Kutch  region. 56 dead bodies are collected from Bhuj alone so far.

Cattle Loss : More than 3000 cattle died in Naliya taluka alone.

Evacuation : 49192 people all over Gujarat were evacuated.

Relief : 

  • Rs. one crore sanctioned by the  government of Gujarat for Kutch and Saurastra region
  • Rs. Fifty lakh released for each district affected by the cyclone.
Electricity : 1658 villages and 22 cities were in darkness due to electricity breakdown. 1000 km long high  tension and 1400 km low tension electricity lines are damaged. 25 substations of 66 KW and 06  substations of 11 KW are affected.

Kutch District

  • Villages around Naliya, Abdasa, Lakhpat, Jakhau, Mandvi are most affected.
  • 19173 people are evacuated from Kutch district.
  • 50 maldhari of Limdi village surrounded by sea waters.
  • People from Sarva colony  of Kandal shifted, once again, in eleven months.
  • Water logging in twelve villages around Jakhau port.
  • Mithi dam suffered damage on its western weir. Mithapari, Khan, Bardi, Berasiya, Andhro, Godhatar over flooded. Land eroded, fields silted.
  • 658 villages of Kutch were in darkness. In  97 villages electricity restored.
  • Power breakdown in Bhuj, Lakhpat and Abdasa talukas.
  • In Abdasa and Lakhpat talukas more than 20 villages are marooned.
  • Loss of cattle, sheep, and camel being estimated.
  • Roads are blocked in Saurastra and Mandvi-Naliya and Naliya-Bhuj of Kutch region.
  • Most affected villages includes : Narayan Sarovar, Chher(Nani and Moti), Shinpur, Lakhpat, Koriyani, 
  • Kupurari, Navagam, Mohadi, Mafatiyapara, Sihodi, Sutari, Limbadavad etc.
  • Houses in the affected villages have lot of damage due to wind and flooding water.
  • 7500 people were shifted from Jakhau area only due to water logging and damage.
  • Many people entrapped on a Shekhranpir island near Jakhau since last 3 days without water and food.
  • 87 boats missed in Jakhau.
Sabarkantha District :
  • Due to early rain and wind groundnut and bajara crops are severely damaged.
  • Electricity supply is disturbed in many villages.
Jamnagar District :
  • From Dalda port of Okha many boats are drawn and at least 50 fishermen are missing.
  • Water went in Okha town.
  • Bridge in between Okha and Mithapur broken.
  • 3810 people evacuated from the various villages of the district.
  • 5 meter high tidal waves were reported.
Bhavnagar District
  • 100 salt works affected by the cyclone causing lot of damage to ready-to-sell salt.
  • In Gogha area water stood up to 3 feet.
Porbandar District
  • One ship drawn away and 15 persons were saved by army.
Bharuch District:
  • In the three talukas Hansot, Jamboosar, and Vagra 227, 400, 490 people respectively were shifted to safer places.
Valsad District 
  • Two deaths are recorded.
Kheda District
  • 25,000 vigha agricultural land became useless in areas towards Bhal due to salty water. For the next 15 years that land can not be cultivated. Before 40 years this area was affected by the same reason and could not be cultivated for 10 years.
Government  Efforts
  • As per the Chief Minister Keshubhai 1.5 crore rupees had been spent for west Kutch to rehabilitation victims.
  • As per Government of Gujarat rules, there is no provision for compensation for cattle death or injury. During the recent cyclone many Maldhari lost their income generating source, cattle, and sheeps.
  • Government of Gujarat announced to build one pakka shelter in all coastal region in form of schools or house of Panchayat. In the time of emergency local people must run over to the taluka shelter for getting immediate protection.
